Welcome to my Web site. My intention is to give women and men
the opportunity to share and receive not only information but
also experiences of our midlife transition. I am a licensed
clinical social worker bringing to the field of menopause my
twenty-five years of experience as a psychotherapist and counselor,
medical social worker, and community activist.
I believe that the midlife transition presents to women and men the challenges of adolescence tempered by the self-knowledge of rich life experiences.
Today we are faced with more lifestyle choices than ever before:
working in the home or a traditional workplace
marriage or single living
traditional health care and/or alternative treatments
a myriad of creative spiritual and physical outlets
These increased options have complicated the task of choosing
what works for the individual in mid-life. Aging is a natural
process, yet often the only education we get is financial
planning for retirement. Other issues of mid-life change
- body image, the "biological clock" and the cessation of
fertility, "hot flashes" and other symptoms of perimenopause,
male and female sexual vitality, the "empty nest syndrome"
when the children have left home, the role of caregiver
to elderly relatives - these are all complex middle age
issues that require knowledge, support, and a confidential
setting to share our intimate feelings with our spouse or
partner, a professional trained in family therapy, and each
other. I hope this Web site, a reflection of my counseling
center in Washington, D.C., will provide this and more for
you.
